Breastfeed Your Babies, Moms!

Helloo again readers :) Today's been a little unproductive. We came to the Health Center early to join the Friday morning aerobic but turned out all the staffs were out visiting a nurse's mother funeral. My biggest condolence to mbak Vita, hope your dearest mother rest in eternal peace :)

So the whole day we were just having our own discussion in the doctor room, discussing how to manipulate the full monday t0 saturday schedule so we can go home to Surabaya in turn --"

We also decided that our mini project will be related to increasing the percentage of exclusive breastfeeding in Desa Kilensari, considering the very low achievement point compared to the target of Panarukan Health Center. Most of the mothers gave their babies food or milk other than breast milk before they are 6 month old. This will certainly lead to malabsorption problem, resulting in malnutrition problem, thus enabling various infectious disease to attack easily and more severely. "The devil chain", we say :(

And today at the Therapeutic Feeding Center (TFC- the icon of Panarukan Health center) ,we got the proof right away. Two twin baby-girls came with their mother complain of bloating, and failure to gain weight during the last two months of Posyandu. At the history taking the mother said she does not breastfeed exclusively. The belief in their social environment is that to make your baby healthier and fatter, breastmilk is not enough, especially for twin babies. Therefore she gave them banana and porridge at 3 month old. That explained the bloating. During the measurement, we found that both babies were malnutrition, so we educate the mother about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. Luckily, the mother was cooperative enough, and willing to stay at the TFC until the body weight/body length of both babies, become normal :)

Afterwork, I went cooking at the girls house, since today they renovate my room to put on an exhausting fan so I could not go home before it's finished. Got back home at about 9pm, and now, writing this post :)

Tomorrow the Health Center will hold a mass circumcision, and we are expected to help. Excited! Will update tomorrow. Now gotta go to bed...

Hey readers :) It's pretty late at night, but I don't know why I'm not sleepy yet, so I decided to write this post.. Well, just a quick review of what's happening today.

7 a.m :Went to Panarukan health center, driving Niken's car together with Titi.
7.30 a.m : Morning report (apel pagi) at Panarukan Health center
8.00 a.m : A patient came to the emergency room, the family was hysterical, when I got there, the patient was full of blood. No carotid pulse, no heart sound at auscultation, both pupils dilated fully. Dead on Arrival :( I suspected the cause of death is asphyxia, since she threw up much blood and was brought to the hospital using random car, no proper positioning. So that was the first time I witnessed the "extreme" sea shore (pesisir) people everybody was talking about...

9.00 -12.00 a.m : "Discussion" at the doctor room with Danang, Wildan, Titi :p

12.30 a.m : 3 patients came at a time. One young man, was a motorcycle driver who crashed into a pedicab with 2 children and 1 lady on it. All 4 victims were brought to the health center, but only found some bruises and excoriations, so we just cleaned the wounds, but again, because they are pesisir (sea shore) people, dramatization :( So many people came and argued in the emergency room (all in Maduranese, which I started to understand a little) and suddenly it was all screaming and yelling.. Oh my... stressful stressful!

but that was all my patients for today, oh, and there was this one old lady who fell in her own bathroom, and got 2 stitches for it.

2 p.m : Niken picked us up, we went to KDS, the hippest place in town :p indeed (just a 2 storey department store, with some fast food stalls and game center) then to the market, buying stuffs for home, theeeennn home sweet home.. err.. kost sweet kost :D

5 p.m : call boyfriend
6 p.m : pray maghrib, then the landlady's sister in law came knocking my room for some consultation about her headache, I thought it was tension headache, told her to relax, have some mefenamic acid.

7 p.m : the landlady's daughter bought me food (again and agaiiinnn,,, and refused my paying, so sweet!)

8 p.m : the landlady came into my room, wanted to check her blood pressure, and another consultation :D

9 p.m : cleaning my room, pray isya'

10 p.m : skype with people at home! this is the best part of the day really! got to see mom, sist, bro, and my silly cat Gareeeng... OMG miss them much!

12 p.m : here, writing this post, reviewing today :)

First Duty!

Hey readers! :)

I'm writing this during my first night shift at Panarukan Public Health Center (Puskesmas). Have been here since 2 p.m and now is 6.30 pm, and still no new patient hehehe.. don't know I have to be happy or sad because of that :p But my first impression of working here, is that the people are extremely welcoming and helpful. They are also very respectful to me as a doctor. They taught me some of the important medical words in Maduranese, and told me to make a small note of it. And they said I'm a fast learner! Happy :)

First week in Situbondo was so far so good, busy with the moving thing, make my room look right. There is this one concern, that my room was so humid that I think it's not healthy, I saw some fungi already formed colony :( So gotta talk to the landlady about this :( The landlady was very very nice, she bought me and my kost-mate Zarrah food almost every night hahaha I guess we will sleep with happy tummy every night! I also have joined the one and only fitness center in town together with Danang, my internship friend. It was extremely crowded and far more conventional and old-fashioned than the one I joined back in Surabaya, but at least there is a facility to keep us healthy :) Happy happy!

My group target for this week is doing the Preliminary Survey at Desa Kilensari (Kilensari village) as the place for my mini project. Wish me luck... Have to go back to the Emergency room for now :) Wait for more updates!
